Letter To the Editor
Dear Editor, Thank You!
I relocated to Centerline, Michigan from Florida in April. Without your publication I would be wandering around blind looking for a game. I have made it a mission to visit every poolroom and bar with a table in my area.
Inside English is the equivalent of a tour guide for the pool scene in this area and I am grateful for it.
I want to share with you a situation I’ve had with Viking Cue.
I have shot with a Viking for ten years or so. I had always wanted a fancy Viking with a 314 shaft. In late October 2002 I made the commitment and ordered my cue. With custom inlays, Indonesian rosewood and a 314 shaft. The investment was $800. I received my cue a day before Christmas 2002. It was unbelievably perfect. Three weeks later, the finish started to distort. I sent it back to Viking and the President, Barry Hart, called to tell me that they did not know why the finish was distorting but they would refinish the cue and have it back to me shortly. A week later, I had my beauty back in my hands and was shooting like a mad man. Another three weeks went by and the finish started to distort again, with swirls and slight indents near the inlays. Back to Viking it went! Barry Hart called me again and questioned me about how I stored my cues. Viking was very confused about what was going on with my cue and wondered if I was doing something weird with it. They refinished the cue once again. I got it back in a few weeks. Not only did they address my concerns about the finish but they re-conditioned and re-tipped both the cue and shaft. Barry also threw in a couple of Viking polo shirts.
Well, guess what? About a month later, the finish was distorting and getting ridges around the inlays again. So, for the third time, I sent it back to Viking. Barry explained that he thinks for some reason the adhesive that hold the inlays had failed and that the finish will continue to distort no matter what. Barry offered to remake my cue or if I wanted, he would send me a Special Edition cue they were working on.
To say I was disappointed about my cue is an understatement, especially when you have wanted something for years, finally get it, and then it turns to pooh. It just plain SUCKS!
Barry Hart and Viking had been very kind to me and did what I think any company should do when there is a problem with their product. So, once again I placed my trust in Viking and told him to surprise me.
On August 5th, I received a little more than a surprise. I received one of the finest cues I have ever seen! There is no question that the cue they sent me exceeded my original investment by several hundred dollars. The President of Viking, Barry Hart, took personal responsibility, and resolved my concerns over and above any expectations I had.
I did not mean to write a novel about my cue, but it just feels so damn good to know that there is a company that really does care and I wanted you to know about it.
I’m looking forward to more issues of your magazine. Soon I will be exploring Ten Mile Road, Skinny’s and Gecko’s. I’ll be easy to spot. I’ll be the guy with the fancy new Viking, wearing a big smile and running the table.
Thank you again, Larry Boles
